TRANSFORMING LIVES IN COMMUNITIES

To date, the Foundation has partnered with several projects that seek to transform communities in a positive way.

Together, we’ll rebuild!

As a result of the multiple damages left behind by Tropical Storm Gustav, the N.C.B Foundation has committed J$6 million to assist with the disaster relief efforts being implemented by the Government of Jamaica (GOJ). Tropical Storm Gustav pelted the country on Thursday, August 28, 2008 into Friday, August 29, 2008 leaving many inconsolable from the loss of their homes and personal belongings in landslides and floods. Infrastructural damages estimated in the billions of dollars have left many of the country’s public roads, bridges, and the agricultural sector as disaster areas. The N.C.B. Foundation is donating J$5 million for the reconstruction of schools that have been damaged in the storm and an additional J$1 million for persons in communities who have been affected by the storm.

In preparation for the potential strike of a hurricane…

The N.C.B. Foundation is working closely with a local non-governmental organization, Caribbean Coastal Area Management (C-CAM) Foundation, to implement a disaster preparedness project for the Portland Bight Area. The activity is the second phase of a $10 million initiative funded by Michael Lee-Chin’s AIC Ltd. in the aftermath of Hurricane Dean in 2007. This phase will focus on developing community disaster plans for six vulnerable fishing villages located along the southern-most tip of the island. These communities, which are home to over 22,000 Jamaicans, have repeatedly been destroyed by hurricanes over the years – most recently Hurricanes Ivan and Dean.
