We, at the Foundation, believe that our young people have the power to become change agents within their schools, their communities and most importantly, in their own lives. Inspired by this belief, the N.C.B. Foundation supports programmes that develop the leadership skills in our youth and encourage active citizenship.
Pass the Torch
The N.C.B. Foundation hosted the “Pass the Torch” school tours as part of the Olympic Homecoming celebrations, which brought our triumphant Olympic athletes to 10 schools across the island. Over 15,000 students participated in these events. Our athletes, role models of our youth, returned to their alma maters to give inspirational messages. They spoke of self-empowerment, hard work for success, pride in oneself, and making choices that will transform goals into reality. The “Pass the Torch” school tours is the first step in a long term youth-to-youth mentorship intervention, initiated by the Foundation, to address specific issues in the schools visited by the athletes.
Beacons for Peace & Achievement (BPA)
BPA is a youth-led organization targeting students from primary through to tertiary level. Their leadership programme, which has received support from the Foundation, aims to enhance the leadership skills of students and empower them to become agents of peace and change within their schools and communities. This unique programme combines youth-to-youth mentorship; video-conferences with youth leaders in other countries; weekly meetings after school; and, workshops to provide total leadership training for young people.
Digicel Rising Stars
The N.C.B. Foundation saw the opportunity to work with the top five (5) Digicel Rising Stars as a chance to show young people that they too can actively change their schools and communities. These contestants are now role models to Jamaican youths and so this project allows them to demonstrate how we all can use opportunities to effect change and impact development within our neighbourhoods. Not only do the project selections show that the finalists understand the issues facing their communities, but more importantly, that they are capable of providing well thought out solutions to address them. We believe these five (5) projects are sound development initiatives which will have long term impact on our youths - as we work together towards Building a Better Jamaica.
